It has been recognised that young people need an interest in hobbies and activities in order to build their sense of well-being, because through actualising themselves they find a meaning for their existence. Hobbies and interests are therefore essential for building a connection to the external world and part of the role of the practitioner is in enabling the young people to initiate and also sustain these interests.

Key skills are gained through an immersion within a hobby which also provides meaning and enjoyment for the young person along with building social connections.
